Ea rly one morning, the sun w as shining
I was laying in bed
Wo ndering if she'd chan ged it all
If her hair was still red
He r folks, they said our lives together
Su re was gonna be rough
They n ever did like mama's home made dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough
And I was standing on the side of the road
Ra in falling on my shoes
H eading out for the east coast
Lord k nows I've paid some dues getting through
Tangled up in bl ue
Sh e was married when we fi rst met
S oon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam, I guess
But I used a little too much force
We dr ove that car as far as we could
Ab andoned it out west
S plit up on a dark, sad night
Both agreeing it was best
Sh e turned around to look at me
As I was walking away
I heard her say over my shoulder
'We'll me et again someday on the avenue'
Tangled up in blue
I had a job in the great north woods
Wo rking as a cook for a spell
But I n ever did like it all that much
And one day the axe just fell
So I dr ifted down to New Orleans
Where I's l ucky for to be employed
Wo rking for a while on a fish ing boat
Right outside of Delacroix
Bu t all the while I was alone
The pa st was close behind
I seen a lot of women
But she n ever escaped my mind and I just grew
Tangled up in blue
Sh e was working in a topl ess place
And I stopped in for a beer
I j ust kept looking at the sigh t of her face
In the spotlight so clear
And l ater on when the crowd thinned out
I's j ust about to do the same
She was st anding there in back of my chair
Said, 'Tell me, don't I know your name?'
I muttered something underneath my breath
She st udied the lines on my face
I m ust admit I felt a little uneasy
When she b ent down to tie the laces of my shoe
Tangled up in blue
Sh e lit a burner on th e stove and o ffered me a pipe
'I t hought you'd never say hello, ' she said
'You look like the silent type'
Then she o pened up a book of poems
And h anded it to me
Wr itten by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And e very one of them words rang true
And gl owed like burning coal
Po uring off of every page
Like it w as written in my soul from me to you
Tangled up in blue
I l ived with them on Montague Street
In a b asement down the stairs
There was m usic in the cafes at night
And revolution in the air
Then h e started into deali ng with slaves
And s omething inside of him died
Sh e had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside
And w hen finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The o nly thing I knew how to do
Was to k eep on keeping on like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue
So n ow I'm going back again
I got to g et her somehow
Al l the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
So me are mathematicians
So me are carpenter's wives
Don't k now how it all got started
I don't what they do with their lives
But m e, I'm still on the road
He ading for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just s aw it from a different point of view
Tangled up in blue
